S.C. Budget Cuts Spur Furloughs For Lawmakers

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Some South Carolina lawmakers will go without pay for additional weeks next year because of the state’s budget troubles.
   
A spokesman for the House of Representatives said Tuesday that members of the chamber will not be paid for three weeks in March and April. Staff members will have 10 days of unpaid leave been January and June.

House members routinely take an unpaid break around Easter. But now they’re taking an extra two extra weeks.
   
There’s additional cost cutting under way. Spokesman Greg Foster says the House also is ditching fancy stationery for members and trimming other printing expenses.
