My Latest Experience With “Myrtle Beach Days”
Just about every native Carolinian has experienced Myrtle Beach Days.
Growing up on a North Carolina tobacco farm, my family took a Myrtle Beach vacation almost every year on the weekend when the crop was too big to plow yet too small to harvest. It was the only time of the year my mom and dad took a break from work.
This past week, I had a fresh experience at the Grand Strand.
A Trip To Pearl Harbor And The Arizona
We went to Hawaii (thank you economic stimulus check) and between the sun, beaches, snorkeling and a luau; we had to make a trip to Pearl Harbor to see the Arizona Memorial. I think it’s something you must do if you’re every fortunate enough to visit Hawaii.

Hot June, Dry June (So Far)
It’s been a long hot month for us around the Western Carolinas with mostly dry conditions. June’s not over, though, and with high rain chances over the next few days, we have a chance to avoid seeing the driest June on record. Besides the dry weather, we’ve dealt with early summer heat we haven’t seen in a while.

Hot Mama
Going through a pregnancy during the summer months is harder than one would expect. Many folks told me how sorry they felt for me when they found out I am due in late August. Here’s the latest on how things are going and how I plan to survive the summer heat with over thirty pounds of extra baby weight!

Soap Box Derby Brings Back Go-Cart Memories
It’s sure changed a lot in its 74 years.
The All-American Soap Box Derby doesn’t involve soap boxes anymore. The race cars are made from kits, and each car must meet very specific standards.
But it’s still all-american, and it still gives kids an opportunity to have good, clean fun.
I had fun too.
The Spartanburg County Parks and Recreation Commission, primary sponsor of Saturday’s (6/14/08) local derby, invited me to serve as announcer for the event.

Lawmaker Performance vs. Voter Apathy
We ran a poll recently on wspa.com concerning your view on how our state lawmakers performed during the just completed General Assembly. The last time I looked at the figures from that nonscientific survey it was around 90% unfavorable for those men and women and the work they do in Columbia.

Jim McKay: An Original, Giant of a Broadcaster
Jim McKay died over the weekend at the age of 86 and it’s another reminder that those of us who are older than 40 are seeing our days passing us by a little quicker. McKay was a tremendous sports broadcaster and yet he wasn’t a guy you ever associated with football, baseball or basketball as he worked for decades for ABC Sports.

It’s Not Black Friday, But It’s Charcoal-like At the Moment
It’s Friday morning and we’re not off to a good start.
Verizon To Buy Alltel? But What About Chad?
I had just one thought when I heard the report that Verizon Wireless was ready to buy Alltel for nearly six billion dollars in cash and take on more than $22 billion in debt. What about Chad?

A Life Saved Right Before My Eyes
Today… for the first time in my life… I witnessed the rescue of a person who was choking.
It was terrifying, and at the same time, miraculous.
Terrifying for it to happen to anyone. But in this case, the victim was one of my long-time friends.
Miraculous… to watch emergency personnel jump into action.
An Afternoon With Indiana Jones
I saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull over the weekend with my wife. Normally you’d think it’s hard to convince a woman to see an all-out action festival, but she’s a big Harrison Ford fan. The bottom line is probably this: if you liked the first three Indiana Jones movies, you’ll like this one.
Welcome to the “Wog”
I enter “blog-world”...local weather will not be the same!
