The jobless rate in South Carolina hit 12.1% in October as nearly 10,000 more people lost jobs.

Thousands of South Carolina’s unemployed will miss out on additional benefits after state officials failed to take the steps necessary to secure them.

SC Employment Commission director to resign

A computer glitch at the South Carolina Employment Security Commission sent 1,250 people two unemployment benefits checks this week.

June unemployment was virtually unchanged in South Carolina from May and the jobless rate in North Carolina fell slightly to 11 percent.

Unemployment in the Palmetto state continues to climb to record highs with a rate of 12.1% for May reported Friday by the Employment Security Commission. That’s a seven-tenths of a point climb from the April unemployment rate of 11.4%.

The state of South Carolina has received over $328 million dollars from the federal stimulus as of Wednesday morning. The vast majority of those dollars have gone to the Department of Health and Human Services for Medicaid.

The jobless rate in the Palmetto state hit 11% in February. It’s the highest figure posted since March of 1983. North Carolina’s figure is up a point to 10.7 percent.

The Palmetto state unemployment rate is now the second highest in the nation. North Carolina also saw the number of jobless workers climb to 9.7% in numbers released Wednesday.
