South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and his family are heading to Europe for a long-planned family vacation.

Gov. Mark Sanford’s spokesman Joel Sawyer says the governor Friday will approve $5 million of federal loans to cover unemployment checks through the end of February.

Sanford said Wednesday he’s been telling legislators for five years that the state’s budget would be wrecked in the next economic downturn.

The governor has asked state agencies for their bottom ten percent of spending, the lowest priorities that could be cut if necessary.
