The State Budget is Three Times Bigger Than Most Think

The Governor and South Carolina Policy Council president say most South Carolina citizens think the state budget is $6 Billion a year, but it’s actually about three times that: $21 Billion.

Payday lending bill up for debate in House panel

The House Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee takes up regulations for the industry Tuesday. The bill is on a fast track with most of the House’s members signed on as co-sponsors.

More Pre-Filed Bills Get A Head Start On Jan. Session

One of the bills would reinstate the sales tax on groceries. It was removed last year as part of the plan to lower property taxes in exchange for a higher sales tax. The average family of four would pay about $225 more a year.

Prefiled Bills Include Cigarette Tax Increase, Driving While Texting Ban

One of the bills would ban the use of cell phones while driving unless you use a hands-free device. It would also make it illegal to text while driving.

S.C. Budget Cuts Spur Furloughs For Lawmakers

A spokesman for the House of Representatives said Tuesday that members of the chamber will not be paid for three weeks in March and April. Staff members will have 10 days of unpaid leave been January and June.

Governor Wants Investigation of Carolina First Bank

The governor wants an investigation into whether Greenville-based Carolina First Bank “gamed the system” by possibly moving up its CEO’s retirement date so he could get an $18 million golden parachute and the bank would qualify for federal bailout money.

South Carolina Senators Override Veto Of DNA Bill

Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell says the bill allowing DNA samples to be taken when suspected felons are arrested will protect citizens from violent criminals. The bill also allows people already in prison to use DNA evidence to clear themselves of charges.
