Red Cross volunteers are helping storm victims in Laurens County

As much as we all wanted it to rain in the recent drought-ravaged years, many now hope for a break from it.

Our plentiful rain this season has often come during fast, destructive storms.

The storms Tuesday 6/16 left hundreds of families in Laurens County, SC and Cleveland County, NC, especially around Kings Mountain, with heavily damaged homes and other property and a long road to recovery.

I’ve covered my share of hurricanes and tornadoes.

Tornadoes scare me the most.

City leaders in Abbeville said the damage estimates from the April 10 tornado will not be enough to qualify for FEMA aid, and they are working to find other possible funding options.

How does the National Weather Service, after the fact, determine whether damage was caused by a tornado or by “straight-line” winds?

The watch is set to expire at 9:00 pm.

A survey conducted after a February, 2008 tornado outbreak across the South indicates many people get the warnings…they just won’t get out of harm’s way.

    “We interrupt this program to bring you a special news bulletin!“

    You hear announcements like this from time to time as you watch television.

    After the announcement is made, the announcer voice returns to say, “We now return to your regular program, already in progress.“

    Viewers don’t like for their favorite programs to be interrupted.

Since I started filling in for Christy Henderson while she had her baby, it has been very busy in the Storm Team 7 Weather Center.

    Drought relief came with terrible danger today.  And it turned this dad a little more gray, just like the storm clouds.

    A tornado touched down in Hart County, Georgia around 1:30 this afternoon.  An hour or so later, the storm produced another possible tornado, this time in the vicinity of Clemson University’s football stadium, damaging trees and buildings.
