Miami And Florida State With A Breath Of Fresh Air

I heard an interesting comment while listening to Monday night’s Miami/Florida State game.

It was noted that back when each was a top five program annually the winner of their game was the one that caused the most penalties.

As I watched the game (one that went down to the wire, as you likely know) it occurred to me that there really weren’t that many flags being thrown nor was there any significant trash talking going on.

Even the new pregame handshake went well.

The game ended with a pass play that would decide the game needing to be reviewed.  Miami and FSU of old would have likely had a taunt-fest prior to the official ruling or would have probably broken out in skirmishes right after the final decision was rendered.

Not these days.  Monday night’s game was as good a game as the ACC has had in a while.  It could turn out that these two meet in the league title game in December (wouldn’t the league love the fact that such a meeting might draw more than the paltry crowd they had last year in Tampa for Va. Tech/Boston College).

If nothing else, tip your cap to two schools that used to have classic battle, but who also had significant “thuggery” on each side, now simply playing a great game with nothing to shake your head about.

On another football note, my pal Robbie Gravely notes that this week is the first time since 9/11 that high school game will take place on a September 11th.

I would think area stadiums will pay their proper respects and I know the folks at Greer have something planned to additionally honor our country.

I’m anxious to see the display as I’m sure maybe just a little extra pride than normal will be on display.
