“Beat down by the Greer CPW”

The CPW has the monopoly over utility companies because there aren’t any others to choose from. They control the electric, gas, water and sewer service. Yes, at first I was impressed with the “all in one” company. With two small children, convenience was always a plus. It didn’t take long for the delusion to come clear. Just as soon as I ran into a financial bind I learned that even though the CPW does business as one company in one building when it comes to late charges, fees or fines they charge you as if they were 3 different companies. If a CPW bill isn’t paid by closing of due date a 5% charge is added. On my bill it averages $15-$20 each month. They don’t allow for even a 1 minute grace period. If a bill isn’t paid by the tenth day after due date another $25 fee is added and disconnection is scheduled. There’s also another $25 fee to reconnect. Many months I have paid $60-$75 in fees & fines. I’ve been a customer of CPW for over 12 years. The first ten as a single parent I was always struggling with finances, kids get sick, cars break down and unforeseen mishaps caused my to pay most of my higher bills late or in installments. It never bothered me that much til this last year. In October of 2008 my husband of 2 years was injured at work and we’ve been battling workers comp ever since without any compensation thus far. Of all our creditors, CPW was the only one that showed no understanding, respect or patience in the matter. They lack simple human compassion. I’ve been made to feel like the scum of the earth for suffering a hardship. They act as if the whole country is not experiencing financial crisis caused by the recession. The “beat down” came today after I spent several hours at the Greer Relief filing an application for assistance.In the mail was a letter from the CPW stating that since I’ve recently been struggling to pay my bill, which is almost as much as my rent, they’re forcing me to pay an additional $400 deposit that must be paid in less than 15 business days. How can they do this you may ask? Easy, the services they provide are life necessities not luxuries and they’re the only providers in our area. After all you can’t run a home and raise a family without electricity, heat and water and they know it and use it to build their wealth.

I have been a Duke Energy customer for over 10 years. I recently received a notice from Duke, stating that I am now required to pay a $145 deposit, because of what they call “unsatisfactory payment history”. In addition, I am a single father with full custody of 2 young boys aged 8 and 12. I am currently receiving unemployment payments, as I was layed off from my job in December. Times have been tough, but we’re scraping by. Until now. I have been a couple of weeks late on my power bill a few times in these past months. Never to any extreme, and its always paid and service is not suspended. How can Duke Power expect me to pay the $208 bill by Aug 25th?? ($63 + $145 deposit). I have had just enough to pay my normal bill (around $65 each month)I called customer service and after 3 or 4 times of “can I speak to your supervisor”, I gave up. The same speech each time. “Sorry, nothing we can do”. They gave me some local assistance numbers, but when I call them…they can only help with food or whatever….no help with this. What are we to do in this economy where we are dealing with mindless robots who have NO heart or compassion for the problems our current economic situation is causing?? I simply can not pay this extra fee. They give the option of providing a “guarantor” to secure the account, but EVERYONE I talk to, family and friends all do not meet the requirements of having not been 1 day late for the past 12 months. Any comments from anyone on this matter from any others with this experience would be welcome.
This has been on my mind for sometime now. I think to cutback on taxpayers expenses the local, county and state officials should cutout take home police vehicles. This is extra gas and insurance to the taxpayers that is not needed. Were I work, in transportation we slipseat vehicles to cut cost and it works out great. What is wrong with two shifts using the same patrol car? I have to drive my personal car to work eventhough I have a company vehicle. I see authoritys using there vehicles for personal use all the time and when you need them, they cannot be found. If law enforcement slipseated vehicles imagine what that would do for there bottom line. No longer one car per manpower. Less vehicle maintenance and less insurance cost. Therefore less taxpayer expense. Afterall we are in a recession and every little bit helps.
