COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Devan Downey hit six foul shots in the
final 74 seconds to help South Carolina beat UC Irvine 67-65
Friday night.
Downey's 3-pointer with 2:19 left tied the game at 60. And his
first of six straight free throws gave the Gamecocks the lead for
good in a game where they trailed by 13 early in the second half.
A pair of free throws by Downey with 24 seconds left put South
Carolina ahead 64-60. Brett Lauer hit a 3-pointer for the
Anteaters, but Downey hit two more foul shots with 12 seconds left
to put the Gamecocks up 66-63.
Darren Fells tied a career high with 20 points for UC Irvine,
and Patrick Sanders also scored 20.
