Greer Football Team Placed On Probation By SCHSL

Greer has been placed on probation by the SCHSL

Greer High's football program has been placed on probation by the South Carolina High School League for having illegal contact during a practice. The Jackets have been barred from post-season play and pre-season jamborees for the season. They may continue to practice and play their regular season schedule although at the moment those who participated in the practice are ineligible.

The school will appeal to the SCHSL.

School principal Marion Waters says the SCHSL determined that a review of video tape and photos that appeared in local media from last Friday's work-out, the first official practice of the season, showed that player-to-player contact occurred while players were holding tackling shields. Under league rules, player-to-player contact is not allowed until the fourth practice. Players are allowed to wear pads the first three days of practice.

Waters says Young had been briefed on recent rules adjustments regarding contact at early practices and that the coach believes the team was operating within the spirit of the rules.

Waters says the school's appeal will take place Monday.

Greer was 3-7 in 2007 and missed the AAA playoffs for one of the few times in their recent history.
