Spartanburg High School named Woodruff's Fred Brown its new head football Wednesday.
Brown replaces Doc Davis, who stepped down in December following a tumultuous 2007 season, which included a 2-9 record and a dispute over the suspension of his starting quarterback. Davis won five state titles in his 18 seasons guiding the Vikings posting a 178-61 record.
Brown was 18-6 in his two seasons guiding the Wolverines (going 9-3 in each season), his only two as a head coach on any level after nearly a decade as an assistant at his alma mater Wofford.
Brown graduated from Wofford in 1991 and served six years as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army and then joined the Wofford College coaching staff in 1999.
Brown noted his desire to return Spartanburg High School to its state championship-calibur level and noted his good fortune in that his two head coaching jobs have come at schools with a rich football tradition.
