Update: C.J. Spiller Ties RB Receiving Record vs. Boston College
Clemson RB C.J. Spiller tied a school record for receiving yards, after it was originally announced the junior had set a new mark. Clemson Sports Information announced Monday, after speaking with former sports information director Brent Breedin, former Tiger Ray Mathews should be considered a running back during his time with the program from 1947-50.
During a 1948 game with Mississippi State Matthews had 105 receiving yards as a wing back, but the wing back in that era was basically a running back.
Thus Spiller tied the Clemson record for reception yards in a game by a running back with his 105 receiving yards on six receptions. Spiller's mark was originally announced as the new record for reception yards by a running back in a single game. Jackie Calvert had 100 receiving yards vs. Duquesne in 1950.
Spiller’s performance was just the third 100-yard receiving game by a Clemson running back.
