CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - In an effort to reduce costs and bring
more excitement to the nation's longest running college basketball
tournament, the Southern Conference is returning to Charlotte next
year for the first time since 1971.
The Southern Conference on announced today its 2010 men's and
women's basketball tournaments will move into Davidson's backyard
from Chattanooga, Tennessee, where it had previously been
scheduled. Chattanooga will host the event instead in 2011 and pay
a reduced financial guarantee.
The first three days of the March 4-8 tournament will be held at
Bojangles Coliseum. The semifinals and finals will be held at the
larger, downtown Time Warner Cable Arena.
The decision comes after the tournament struggled with
attendance in Chattanooga. The conference said the move to a more
centralized location will also lower travel costs during the
economic downturn.
