Clemson's Jeff Schaus had likely seen the moment in a dream.
Tuesday night, he lived it with his team trailing Coastal Carolina 3-1 with two out in the bottomm of the ninth and the bases loaded. Schaus delivered a game-winning grand slam on the first pitch as the 20th-ranked Tigers upended number 19 Coastal Carolina, 5-3.
The Tigers, who upped their winning streak over the Chanticleers to seven games, improved to 27-14, while Coastal Carolina fell to 30-10.
Tiger reliever Clinton McKinney (3-0) earned the win, as he pitched a hitless and scoreless ninth inning with three strikeouts. Starter Graham Stoneburner pitched 6.0 strong innings, allowing just five hits, one unearned run, and two walks with five strikeouts.
At USC Upstate's Harley Park, South Carolina made its first-ever visit to the Spartans' home turf and rolled to a 14-6 victory.
Nick Ebert put the Gamecocks on the board with a two-run homer in the first, his 14th round-tripper of the season.
USC Upstate tied the game in the second on Kyle Simpson's two-run single.
Former Riverside stand-out Drew Crisp put the Gamecocks back in front with a two-run single. Whit Merrifield then delivered a grand slam in the fourth and the Gamecocks rolled from there, improving to 27-14 on the year.
