Longtime coach Kevin Steele is set to become Clemson's next defensive coordinator, barring a last-minute change of heart, according to published reports.
Steele, a Dillon native, could be named as early as Friday by Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney, who said following Thursday's Gator Bowl that he will name someone to the position when he returns to Clemson from the bowl site.
Steele's Alabama team takes on Utah Friday night in the Sugar Bowl.
Steele's coach resume includes other stops as an assistant at Nebraska, Florida State, and the Carolina Panthers. He also once served as head coach at Baylor.
The Tiger defensive coordinator job opened in early December when Vic Koenning stepped down after four seasons.
Swinney also interviewed Tennessee's John Chavis, who eventually took the same job at LSU.
