CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) - The father of PGA Tour winner and former
Clemson golfer Jonathan Byrd has died from brain cancer. James Byrd
Jr. was 65.
The school said the elder Byrd, father of current Clemson
assistant golf coach Jordan Byrd, died Monday.
Jonathan Byrd, a three-time winner on the PGA Tour, has not
played since the Memorial Tournament. He has withdrawn from this
week's John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill.
James Byrd lettered in baseball and football at the University
of North Carolina. However, his family said his passion was golf
and competing with his sons.
James Byrd was diagnosed with brain cancer after collapsing at a
Clemson football game in November 2007. He underwent surgery soon
after.
Memorial services will be held Friday at First Presbyterian
Church in Columbia with a private burial to follow.
