Gaffney's Gallman Contends In Big Tourney

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Spartanburg, S.C. - USC Upstate standout golfer Josh Gallman won both of his matches Friday to move into the quarterfinal round of the 95th Carolinas Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Charleston. The senior from Gaffney, S.C., will face Thomas Bullock Saturday morning in the quarterfinal match.

Gallman, who recently earned Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar honors, began the day as the No. 4 seed in the match play portion of the tournament after finishing tied for second in the 36-hole stroke play qualifying portion of the championship Wednesday and Thursday. He began play against 29th seed Jayson Judy of Gibsonville, N.C., Friday morning. Gallman was solid throughout the match and claimed a 2 & 1 victory to move into the Round of 16.

In the Round of 16, Gallman faced Paul Woodberry from Lake City, S.C. Woodbury was the No. 13 seed and won his first round match 3 & 2 over Kent George. Gallman turned in an even better performance Friday afternoon than he did in the morning, dispatching Woodbury 3 & 2 to move into the quarterfinals of the championship.

Gallman will face Bullock, the tournament’s No. 5 seed, in the quarterfinal match starting at 8:10 am Saturday morning. Bullock, from Greensboro, N.C., claimed a 3 & 2 victory over Jacob Burger in the first round and a 2-up win over Rob Simmons in the Round of 16 to move into the quarters with Gallman.

Gallman is a rising senior at Upstate and has been a mainstay at the top of the Spartans lineup throughout his career. He broke onto the collegiate scene at the 2007 NCAA Division II National Championships, firing a 5-under-par 67 in the final round to help lead Upstate to a second-place finish by just one stroke. An honorable mention All-American as a freshman, he led the Spartans into Division I competition as a sophomore in 2007-08, finishing with four individual tournament titles while earning A-Sun All-Conference honors. He again claimed All-ASun honors this year after ranking in the top 4 in stroke average in the league throughout the year.
