Boiling Springs High School's football team has been barred from this season's state playoffs by the South Carolina High School League's executive committee after using an ineligible player during spring practice.
The vote was12-0.
The Bulldogs used an eighth-grader in four spring practices. League rules state only ninth-graders and above are allowed to compete in varsity contact sports.
The league did restore the eligibility of about 100 Bulldogs players, which allows them to compete in the regular season.
“I couldn’t be anymore disappointed,” head coach Bruce Clark told the Spartanburg Herald-Journal. “The beauty of it is we do get to get ready to play football. We get to play 11 games. As I said from the beginning, this is my fault. I never go into something fearing the worst. I’m not that type of person, but we got (the worst) and we’ve got to move on.”
Boiling Springs was 8-4 in Clark's first season in 2008 and lost in the opening round of the playoffs at eventual Big 16 runner-up Sumter.
