ELON, N.C. (AP) - Elon and Wofford played the longest game in
the 55-year history of Southern Conference baseball Friday night,
with the Phoenix winning 12-11 on a sacrifice fly in the 18th
inning.
The game, which took more than six hours and ended after 1 a.m.
Saturday, shattered the old record of 15 innings by Appalachian
State and East Tennessee State in 2000.
The Terriers scored seven runs in the eighth and ninth, and the
Phoenix needed a fielding error to tie the game in the bottom of
the ninth.
Michael Gilmartin went 5-for-9 with four RBIs for Wofford, while
Chase Austin went 4-for-8 and drove in two runs for Elon.
The Phoenix used seven pitchers, while the Terriers used six.
Wofford set league records with 76 at bats and 25 strikeouts,
while Elon stranded a SoCon record 22 hitters.
