GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Wilson Boyd and Ben Paulsen combined for eight hits and drove in five runs to propel Clemson to an 8-5 victory over Furman in baeball action in front of 4,324 fans at Fluor Field on Monday afternoon.
Boyd and Paulsen both recorded 4-for-5 performances at the plate in helping Clemson (35-17) race to an 8-1 lead. Furman (21-17) used a Campbell Lewis three-run home run in the eighth to cut the lead to 8-5 but could get no closer. The loss gave both teams a split in the season series following Furman’s 4-2, 14-inning win at Clemson on Mar. 3.
Boyd stroked a two-out, three-run double in the first inning, tripled in the third, and singled and scored in both the fifth and seventh innings. Paulsen, meanwhile, cracked a two-run home run in the third and consecutive singles in the fourth, sixth, and eighth. Jason Stolz also went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs for the Tigers, who racked up 14 hits in the contest.
Furman, which collected 10 hits, was paced by Justin Holloway, who went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles. Andrew Cadeger contributed two hits, and Lewis’ three-run home run in the eighth was his fifth of the year.
David Haseleden (1-0) earned the victory after allowing a run on five hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out six.
Justin Sarratt, who came on the eighth to record the final out after the Paladins’ roughed up Tigers reliever Alex Frederick for four runs, worked a perfect ninth to notch his first save of the season.
J.P. Goldsberry (3-5) absorbed the loss. He was touched up for five runs on four hits. The senior right-hander walked five and struck out three. Furman pitchers issued eight walks in the game.
The Paladins wrap up the regular season with a three-game home series against UNC Greensboro beginning on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
Any combination of one Furman win and one loss by Wofford in its SoCon series at Georgia Southern will lock up the eighth and final seed for the Paladins in this year’s SoCcon Tournament, set for May 20-24 at Fluor Field. Furman (9-18 SoCon) holds a game and a half lead over Wofford (7-19).
