FLORENCE, S.C. – Furman junior Austin Reeves fired a final round 70 to claim individual medalist honors and lead Furman to the team championship at the 2010 Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the Country Club of South Carolina.
Reeves was the only golfer in the field to beat par in all three rounds, totaling nine-under par 207 to claim a five-stroke victory, the second of his collegiate career. The junior birdied five of the first 11 holes to build an insurmountable lead over the field.
In addition to Reeves, Furman boasted three other golfers in the top eight as Garland Farrell (212) finished in a tie for second while Anthony Aloi (215) and Daniel Bowden (216) placed seventh and eighth, respectively.
Elon senior Jayson Judy vaulted from the 14th spot into a tie for second with a final round 67. He was joined there by Ferrell and UNC Greensboro’s Ryan Heisey.
Elon’s Steve Dressel and Georgia Southern’s Ryan Zabroske finished in fifth place with 214, and four individuals placed ninth with 217, including Western Carolina duo Ricky Stout and Tanner Briele, UNC Greensboro’s Will Bowman and Georgia Southern’s Spencer Fulford.
Tuesday’s low round was fired by Davidson’s Bobby Urso, whose 66 equaled Reeves’ round two score for the lowest of the tournament.
Georgia Southern (865) edged UNC Greensboro (867) to grab the runner-up spot while Elon (874), Western Carolina (878) and College of Charleston (886) filled slots four through six. Rounding out the field were Chattanooga (887), Appalachian State (891), Wofford (895), Davidson (904) and Samford (912).
Furman’s win was the 13th Southern Conference championship in program history and the first since 2004. The Paladins’ effort also marked the lowest team score (849) in the four years that the event has been held at the Country Club of South Carolina and the 16-stroke margin of victory was the greatest since 2001.
Furman head coach Todd Satterfield was chosen as the league’s Coach of the Year by his peers, while Chattanooga sophomore Stephan Jaeger was honored as the Player of the Year. Wofford’s Mark Joye was named Freshman of the Year.
With the win, Furman earns an automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals, which begin May 20 at six sites around the country.
