SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Top draft pick Cam Newton will start at

quarterback for the Carolina

Panthers in their second preseason

game Friday.

Coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday that Newton would take the first

snap against the Miami Dolphins as part of the plan to alternate

the rookie and Jimmy Clausen, who started last week against the New

York Giants.

Rivera said the first-team offense would play about one half and

Clausen would get reps with the first-stringers to keep the

quarterback competition even.

Rivera said he would likely announce next week which player will

start in the opener Sept. 11 against Arizona.
