Spartanburg, SC – Quarterfinal and semifinal round match play results of the 39th South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by The Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, SC on Saturday, June 18, 2011 (6812 yards, par 36-36—72, Rating: 73.2/138).
Two local upstate college standout golfers will fight for their first CGA championship title in Sunday’s 18-hole championship match at the South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship. Mark Joye of Columbia, a rising junior at Wofford College, faces Adam Goins of Gaffney, a rising sophomore at USC-Upstate and a cart attendant at The Carolina Country Club at 8:00am.
Joye, the 2008 Carolinas Junior Boys Player of the Year, defeated defending champion Todd White of Moore, 4 & 3, in the quarterfinals. White never led in the match and was four down after eight holes. They would go on to halve the next seven holes to seal the victory for Joye. Joye then beat Nelson Dickson of Spartanburg, 3 & 2, in the afternoon semifinals. Dickson was in control through the first 11 holes. Joye then won the 12th, 13th, 14th and 16th holes to win the match.
Goins road to the finals saw him defeat qualifying medalist Alex Ellis of Charleston, 1 up. Then Goins defeated Steve Liebler of Irmo on the 19th hole with a par four. Liebler controlled most of the match and was 1 up through 14 holes. But a 45-minute weather delay changed the momentum. Goins chipped in for birdie on the 15th hole to square the match. Then he sank a 15-foot birdie on the 16th hole to take a 1 up lead. After halving the 17th hole, Liebler sank a 20-foot eagle putt on the par-five 18th hole to send the match into extra holes. On the 19th hole, Liebler’s short-iron approach missed the green long and right but could not make the 12-foot par putt to extend the match any further.
