Greenville, SC –
Wearing the uniforms of their parent clubs, the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, the Drive (17-19) and Charleston RiverDogs (16-20) decided to pummel each other in a different manner on Saturday at Fluor Field. The two teams combined for 32 hits, 15 of which went for extra bases.
However, it was the visiting RiverDogs who came away with a 17-7 victory behind their four homers and seven doubles.
Greenville and Charleston matched each other through the first inning as they both plated a pair of runs. A solo homer by J.R. Murphy and RBI-double by Gary Sanchez gave the RiverDogs an early lead, but the Drive quickly answered with on back-to-back, two-out RBI-singles from Brandon Jacobs and Lucas LeBlanc.
The see-saw battle continued as the Drive claimed a one-run lead in the bottom of the second, only to have Charleston regain a two-run advantage in the top of third on back-to-back homers by Ramon Flores and Kelvin Deleon.
But once again, Greenville answered scoring three runs in the bottom of the third. LeBlanc recorded his fifth straight multi-hit game with an RBI-double, and Jose Garcia’s two-run homer made it 6-5. It was the shortstop’s first homer since April 8th, a span of 111 at bats.
However, that’s where the Drive’s offense halted and the RiverDogs hit on all cylinders. Charleston posted 12 runs over their final four innings, including an eight-run effort in the top of the ninth.
With two outs the RiverDogs final at bat, second baseman Drew Dominguez moved to the mound to record the final out. Having entered in the ninth to play third base, David Renfroe belted a long solo homer for the Drive’s final run.
The Drive and RiverDogs continue their rivalry on Sunday at Fluor Field with first pitch set for 4:05 PM. Right-hander Kyle Stroup (1-3, 7.90 ERA) will toe the rubber for Greenville, while Charleston counters with southpaw Nik Turley (1-3, 3.52 ERA).
Prior to Sunday’s game, the Drive and Greenville County will host “Drive Me to Wellness” at Fluor Field, with exhibits promoting a healthy lifestyle. Following the game, kids will get to run the bases.
