Anchor at WSPA-TV
Fred Cunningham is the Daybreak and Noon Anchor for 7 On Your Side. He joined our morning news team in February, 2002.
Fred has covered a variety of stories: from our occasional volatile weather, to consumer stories and feature tales showing his unique sense of humor.
Before moving to the anchor desk, Fred spent 15 years as the weekend sports anchor for 7 On Your Side. He covered Clemson University and University of South Carolina athletics as well as NASCAR racing, the Masters and Heritage golf tournaments, the Carolina Panthers, three Super Bowls, and the rise of the Atlanta Braves into one of baseball's most successful franchises.
Fred is a two-time winner of the Associated Press Best Sportscast award in South Carolina. In addition to his news duties, Fred has hosted the Miss South Carolina Pageant and serves as play-by-play voice of Clemson University football TV replays seen throughout the southeast as well as high school football in the Upstate.
Fred also shot a scene - portraying a sports reporter - opposite actor Will Ferrell for the movie Talladega Nights.
Fred's screen time wound up being just a quick appearance in the trailer for the film, but he knows Kevin Costner bounced back from being cut out of The Big Chill. Fred says that should be the end of his movie career.
The Indiana University graduate moved to South Carolina in 1984. He served as a sports reporter for WOLO-TV in Columbia until April of 1987. Fred covered news, sports, and hosted call-in talk shows for WIFE-AM and WBWB-FM in Indiana from 1980-82.
In his spare time Fred loves playing golf, running, all while suffering the endless frustration of being a Chicago Cubs and Indiana Pacers fan. Fred, his wife Kellie and their daughter Genna live in the Upstate and enjoy its close proximity to the mountains and the beach.
